ABOUT DHOKAR
Dhokra refers to a wide range of handcrafted brassware products that are crafted by the 'lost-wax technique' of metal casting. It is the oldest form of craft named after the Dhokra Damar tribe of metalsmiths in West Bengal. This art is spread over the eastern part of India including West Bengal, Jharkhand, Orissa, and Chhattisgarh. The process involves molding the desired shapes and designs onto a clay core with wax. This is followed by the application of multiple layers of finely prepared clay paste that helps in creating a hollow cast in which the wax is replaced with molten metal, i.e., brass. No two Dhokra artworks are alike and the inspiration for the art is derived from mythology and the environment.
